Description: Foster development of scientific knowledge needed to enhance the health, productivity, independence, and quality-of-life of people with disabilities. A primary goal of Center-supported research is to bring the health related problems of people with disabilities to the attention of the best scientists in order to capitalize upon the myriad advances occurring in the biological, behavioral, and engineering sciences. The NCMRR uses seven research priorities to help guide its research and research priorities. The research initiatives and opportunities recommended in the Research Plan (PDF - 223 KB) for the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research are discussed in terms of seven cross-cutting areas in which increased research effort is needed. Those areas are: * improving functional mobility * promoting behavioral adaptation to functional losses * assessing the efficacy and outcomes to medical rehabilitation therapies and practices * developing improved assistive technologies * understanding whole body system responses to physical impairments and functional changes * developing more precise methods of measuring impairments, disabilities, and societal and functional limitations * training research scientists in the field of rehabilitation In addition, the NCMRR has its own National Advisory Board on Medical Rehabilitation Research that meets twice a year to discuss the Center''s portfolio and research directions.
