Gemma is an open-source database and software system for the meta-analysis of gene expression data. Gemma contains data from hundreds of public microarray data sets, referencing hundreds of published papers.

To access the data from the NIF interface the user can type in most gene symbols or names, also diseases and brain regions will often bring back results.  Below, we search for the gene GRM1.

The data can be found by looking at the Data Type > Microarray category.

Gemma data are partially represented in NIF and the goal of this representation is to allow users to know that a particular dataset can be accessed through Gemma, not to reproduce any of the powerful tools that Gemma contains.

Clicking on the Gene Symbol provides access to individual Gemma records.

Below, we have clicked the GRM1 in the first row and we are brought to the summary of software tools in Gemma.

It is beyond the scope of this tutorial to demonstrate the functionality of Gemma tools for statistical analysis of genes.  Novice users may wish to start by becoming familiar with the tutorial materials that Gemma provides.

Clicking on the General help leads to a page where users can begin to understand the true power of statistically viewing microarray data.
