Addgene Tutorial

Browse Addgene data in NIF
For more information, visit Addgene Homepage or the NeuroLex entry  for Addgene

Addgene is a non-profit organization dedicated to making it easier for scientists to share plasmids.  Therefore they are attempting to make it easy to find the plasmid that you may be looking for and will sell/distribute it to you.  They do have some distributions to for profit companies, but this is restricted so please refer to their documentation.

To access plasmid information through NIF, we can search for gene names or synonyms.  Below, we search for Ubiquitin.

Information about plasmids is found under:
Data Federation > Data Type > Plasmids

Plasmid name, insert name, the species, markers, vector backbone as well as authors and keywords are displayed.  For ubiquitin there are 95 plasmids available, and clicking on the blue link in the Plasmid Name column will lead the user to the Addgene site, where more information is available on plasmids and where these can be ordered.

Clicking on the Ubiquitin (first entry) leads to this page where similar information to the information displayed in NIF can be found, but the researcher can chose to add this plasmid to their cart from this page.  We recommend looking through this website as many genetic tools are available through it.  Below we select the view sequence option.

The sequence for Ubiquitin WT is available here, both from the depositing lab and addgene.  Selecting the Analyze Sequence option leads users to several analysis tools.

It is beyond the scope of this tutorial to explain all of the tools available in addgene, but many can be found in the black lettered tabs in the middle of the page and they include tools to view the gene sequence on a map, BLAST the sequence, and align it.
