MyNIF functionality

Why should I log in?

MyNIF functionality allows users to set their gene expansion preferences and keep them when using the NIF.

The preference link gives species specific options for the gene search.

Logging in saves the preferences.

To log in, use the Log in link at the top of the ‘Search the NIF’ page.

This will bring up a dialogue box with two options for logging in: Google and Yahoo.
If you have an account with either of these free email services, you can use the functionality of MyNIF.

Clicking on either provider leads to the providers’ page and asks whether the application is allowed to use the so called ‘open ID’.  Click on the Allow button:

You will be taken back to NIF, but you will be logged in and you can change and save your species preferences.  Click on the Preferences link.

This will bring you to the pop-up box showing a list of species classes.

Then you can use the gene: search of the NIF.  In this example, the Bacteria, Invertebrate, Mammals, Phages, Rodents, and Synthetic options are checked.  The search for gene:grm1 brings back NCBI known synonyms from those species.

If you clear the search and select preferences again to only mammals and search again for gene:grm1, no synonyms appear as would be expected.

Note that the default setting is for mammals, and all genes are different so searching for most plant genes will bring up no synonyms in the default setting ‘mammals’.
